History of Mohun Bagan’s “Immortal XI”
The year is exactly 1911, the life of the people of India is at stake under British rule. At that time, Mohun Bagan Football Club is providing ammunition to the people of India to drive out the British from the subjugated India. At that time, the highest level football tournament in subjugated India was the IFA Shield. Where the teams of the British regiment had exclusive dominance. In 1909 and 1910, Mohun Bagan did not succeed in participating in the IFA Shield.
Then came the historic year of 1911. After defeating one team after another, the Mohun Bagan team of 11 Bengalis, playing barefoot, reached the final of the 1911 IFA Shield. The final was scheduled for Saturday, July 29, 1911, at the Calcutta FC ground, which is now the Mohun Bagan ground.
1911 IFA Shield Final: Mohun Bagan Vs British East Yorkshire Regiment
British East Yorkshire Regiment faced Mohun Bagan in the final. The Bengali struggle for independence, the fight to exterminate the British, on the playground. People started coming from the neighboring states of Bihar and Assam to watch Mohun Bagan’s victory. It is said that special trains were also provided for the supporters at that time. About 80,000 spectators attended the field that day. In order to fill the ground, someone climbed on trees, posts, etc. to watch the match. To understand the score, it was done that if British East Yorkshire scored a goal, a black kite would be flown and if Mohun Bagan scored, a green kite would be flown.

1911, July 29, IFA Shield Final match started. 11 barefoot Bengali Mohun Bagan warriors vs British East Yorkshire team. Mohun Bagan played with dominance in the first half but could not score. The first half remained 0-0. East Yorkshire got a free kick in the second half. Their captain Sergeant Jackson scored from that free kick to give East Yorkshire a 1-0 lead. When Mohun Bagan was 1-0 behind, Bagan captain Shibdas Bhaduri took the responsibility of bringing Mohun Bagan back to equalize in the match. Mohun Bagan returned to equalize 1-1 with Shibdas Bhaduri’s goal. When there were 2-3 minutes left in the match, Abhilash Ghosh received the ball from Shibdas Bhaduri and put the ball in the net. The scoreline of the match was Mohun Bagan 2-1 British East Yorkshire. In the end, Mohun Bagan defeated British East Yorkshire in the final and won the 1911 IFA Shield.
The British massacre began right from that time. If 11 barefoot Bengalis could defeat the British on the football field, then India could also be free from the British one day, this belief was instilled in everyone’s mind by Mohun Bagan that day. In subjugated India, 11 Bengali Mohun Bagan footballers defeated 11 booted Englishmen on the football field that day and gave them their first taste of freedom.

Mohun Bagan’s Immortal XI is being set up in Andul Howrah – where? Exact Location:
The “Immortal XI” (Amor Ekadosh) is being installed in Howrah, West Bengal, in memory of the 11 Bengali Mohun Bagani players who won the 1911 IFA Shield against the British. The proper location is in Andul, Howrah, just in front of the petrol pump, on Station Road. The first ‘Amor Ekadosh’ installation ceremony of Howrah will be held on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at 5 pm at Duillya Station Road, P.C. ROY Road crossing (in front of the petrol pump).
